[Spoilers] Bastion Of The Penitent

Recommended Posts

Raids been out for 3 weeks now, and I think its a good time as any to reflect on the design, story, and the overall "challenging" aspect of this wing.

In regards to the design, the ominous and dark art direction of this wing is probably my favorite thus far. It feels very cohesive, almost oppressive in some areas. It's really nice. The only thing that really stands out and feels kind of "meh" - is the recreation room, the flow of it really seems to interrupt the isolated arenas of both Deimos and Cairn, with Samarog being a warden of... a chess board.

Perhaps my favorite part is the story though, Saul's past has been a story thats lingered since the original game, the origination of the white mantle has always been contested, and many thought the organization to be inherently evil. If you haven't had a chance to play the wing, or watch the cutscenes - I suggest you look them up, as it concludes a very interesting story.

In terms of "challenge" - Bastion of the Penitent leaves little to be desired. The bosses in their "normal" modes do have some difficulties, but any experienced raider should be able to quickly overcome them with practice. Perhaps the biggest challenge is toppling all four challenge motes, something I am still working on myself.

Overall, I really like this wing. I think it is leaps and bounds ahead of the previous wings - it is my hope that future wings continue the trend of four bosses, or perhaps even 3 true bosses. The events being gone is a much welcomed change from me.

So, what are your thoughts, raiders?

Challenge motes will be interesting, good riddance to "encounters" like trio and escort but most importantly good bye to stupid events between bosses that are just pointless fillers and wastes of time like twisted castle and spirit run. Personally deimos is pretty tedious and hard to recover from if one of the key people is having a bad day and mursaat overseer is kinda dumb. Don't care too much about story

I'm hoping to eventually get enough experience in this wing to get bosses 3 and 4 and the challenge motes.  The "chess" mechanic of the second boss is interesting, but it could have been better since you can ignore it for most of the fight.
