Where does "your" main character's name come from?

Recommended Posts

I see a lot of names in GW2 that just doesn't make any sense to me.  I can google the names to look them up further.. but I just don't find much results.  Like what is a Merforga .. seriously? .. lol

A majority of people here know where my name comes from (The anime franchise Dragon Ball Z).

What does your character(s) name mean and/or come from?

Two of mine are from characters I've created for comic/stories, three are Homestuck references, one is from Pacific Rim, one is from a Magic card, one is a modification of some flower names, and one was me doing some random searching for something cool and Norse.

Koomaster - My nickname since forever and easy to taxi on. Based on a bird call I used to do as a kid.

Franziska Blaumeise - Based on Franziska Von Karma from Phoenix Wright and last name is a type of blue bird.

Frango Redintegro - My asuran engineer, name is latin and roughly means 'I break, I repair'.

Island in the Dream - A sylvari, name is based on the song Islands in the Stream.

Fluffs My Dander - Phrase my friend uses, means something is irritating.

Mac N Trees - Was creating a sylvari character while eating lunch and welp. Was originally Macaroni And Trees but decided to delete/remake with the shorter name. Surprised both names were available.

Wyverix is a mixture of two of my favourite mythical creatures. A wyvern and a phoenix. My old gamertag from 2005 to 2013 was Data, hence my gw2 account name. It wasn't named after anything in particular, 11 year old me just thought it sounded edgy and cool as an online name. Not very original though...

Well this one is a bit awkward to answer. I will state quite clearly  - I WAS 13!!!!!

So my real first name starts with L. Kyrie come from Kyrie eleison which means "Lord Have Mercy"

Combine the two and you get Kyriel, which is one of two character names I have been using since I was 13. (The other one was Elfy/creativity -100DKP)

Basically all my character names in GW2 are some derivative of Kyriel (Which wasn't available )

Ranger - Kyriellis

Elementalist - Eleyariel (so awkward in Pug groups with two eles, I never know who they are talking to)

Warrior - Kyriel Johanes

Guardian - Kyriel deWolfe

Mesmer - Fairyiel (mesmer - illusions)

Thief - Arendryiel (Arendt is a male slavic name meaning Eagle ruler, she's a Norn)

Engineer - Kyrieclaw (she's a Charr)

Revenant - Sassiel - Blame Shebani and lack of sleep that made me actually do it.

Necromancer - I haven't made one yet, but I'm open to name suggestions.

tl;dr - I was a teenager. Enough said.

Hehehe, this one has some history behind it.

Basically, when I was playing Phantasy Star Online, all my characters had the last name of "Miang", because I was a mag grower and knew how to get mutations of the character's ID with that last name. It didn't sound very pretty though... As such, when I went to DCUO (the next game where you could have two names) I wanted something that had a nicer sound. I had recently finished replaying FFVII - Dirge of Cerberus, and still had a really warm spot for Rosso the Red, lol... so that's where "Rosso" came from!

Otherwise, all my characters have their first names based on a roleplaying character that I either still play, or have played in the past, IRL. Well, except one. Most folks know which one that is, though. :hee:

Mine are a little random.

Serious Characters
Fleshwrought (charr warrior), I was having a mindblank for my main but his name comes from a band I was listening to a lot at the time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZGljDQmavE&list=PLoZzC7rcKfpENT50KMOvL_EreahFhWMbn

Valerie Frost (norn guardian), I use the name Valerie in a few games because I like it and the frost aspect is just from her being a norn I guess.

Rachel Rotten (human ranger), This one is pretty funny, I mentally high five people who whisper me while I'm on her. She's a gothic/punk porn actress. SFW photo: http://40.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m2n0zyyWWN1qh8ozio1_500.jpg

Locust Feast (sylvari necro), Just based around the skill Locust Swarm as all the other names I wanted weren't working.

Terrorhorse (asuran elementalist), Band again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDKyy06jRvY not very original I know.

Olivia Serpentine (human mesmer), Olivia is just another girls name I really like and Serpentine (Serpentinite) is this beautiful green stone commonly found in australia. (I was seeing a geologist at the time as well)
Eir Cliffstrider (norn thief), This character is build to look exactly like Eir apart from her weapons, I had just finished reading The Edge of Destiny and Eir is a badass. Cliffstrider is her fathers surname.

Spoiler

(HoT story... heartbreak)

Imperiator Rytlock (charr engineer), This character I couldn't lock down a name for and I misspelled Imperator and it was accepted. I want to change its name, open to suggestions.
Agony Check (human revenant), I really didn't expect this name to be available. Just taken from Fractals Agony Check.

Fun Characters (not 80s)

Materials Inspector (asuran thief), I made this guy when I needed T6 mats for my legendary. He's got a real shifty face and wears a suit outfit. haha.

Dancing For Gold (human guardian), This is my key run character. When she isn't making keys shes dancing in popular tourist places. Dancing her way through The College of Synergetics.

I have more spots if anyone has any suggestions for fun characters to make.

My main is my ranger, Abeha - it's a more phonetic friendly version of the spanish word abeja, which means bee. The character is a charr and I made it look like one of my cats, who is named the Bee. I thought it was amusing. lol.

Most of my character names are names I've made up, either completely on my own or with the aid of fantasy name generators (I usually will modify name generator results to make sound better and make the name my own). My names are just intended to sound cool and do not have intended meanings.

I actually have an interesting story.   A long time ago I fell into depression.  Got kicked out of my house, my best friend at the time found "new friends" and my grandparents passed away all while being unemployed because of the recession.   I went on a walk in the snowy mountain passes and saw a group of Ravens ontop of a tree,  just chilling (#MondayPunday).   I just started observing them, and all of a sudden felt much better.  It may have even saved my life,  though I was never suicidal.   After that things just got... better.

The paradox comes from just me randomly saying, "what goes well with Raven" and someone mentioned Paradox.   Raven Paradox is actually a paradox theory as well,  so it kind of stuck.

Here are my toon names:

1. Spicca (Asura Elementalist) - I was struggling to come up with a female Asura name for my main that adhered to lore (double consonants), so in a last-ditch effort I chose the word Spica (a blue binary star system in the Virgo constellation, and my favorite star in the night sky) and Asura-fied the word, adding an extra 'c'. Fun Trivia: "Spica" is supposed to be pronounced as "Spyca", so members and leaders have probably been pronouncing my name wrong since time immemorial.

2. Ryndar Ebonshield (Charr Guardian) - I also tried to adhere to lore with this name. I used the name of an alt Charr of a former leader (whose name shall rename anonymous out of respect) to come up with a growly name of "Ryndar", and this character is a member of the Shield warband, a group of Charr dedicated to the martial fortitude of the Legions in the field of battle. Fun Trivia: "Ryndar" also takes inspiration from the name 'Rijndael' (pronounced 'Ryndal'), the working name of what would become the AES encryption algorithm. I'm a cryptography junkie.

3. Jezekk (Asura Engineer) - A random name that tries to adhere to Asura naming schemes. Nothing remarkable here.

4. Jenny Page (Human Mesmer) - First of all I love the name "Jennifer". A lot. Not sure why, but I'd name my future daughter Jennifer in a heartbeat. I also adore rock legend Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin. Hopefully you can see how these two facts come together to come up with a character name.

My original name in Guild Wars was Amber Jacobbs, which was a name i used from Lineage II for my Hawkeye (an archer). Just made it up.

Jacobbs - went by this name for Guild Wars with first names, so I had to grab this one for myself once Guild Wars 2 came out.

Alison Jacobbs - GW1 main

Amber Jacobbs - GW1 first character (A ranger, of course)

I had a number of other Jacobbs characters, one that has returned in GW2:

Emera Jacobbs (was my paragon, now a revenant) - Emera can mean "Industrious Leader" - which is perfect for a paragon.

New in GW2, is my ele's name: Ulima which is of Arabic origin and translates to something like "astute and wise."

Well, I don't have many interesting stories, but.. my Reaper, Enuvyh's name is just a butchered spelling of "Envy". Though, I've gotten to calling him just "N" since the sound of "En" as a nickname is essentially a letter.

Mhaica came from "Micah", another name I'm fond of. Mica is also a type of stone, but.. the character himself was based on a bee. :')
